New Kid on the vine

I recently discovered Clos du Vully wine at the Eastern Ontario Wine Show. I was very surprised by the quality of their wine and the amiability of the wine maker, Jan-Daniel Etter. So last weekend, I entered the address in my GPS and drove up there with my wife, 20 minutes outside of Ottawa, direction Navan, in dairy farm territory.

Upon our arrival, we entered a farming property identified by a Clos du Vully Winery sign; so, I was in the right place! Although not immediately obvious, you could see the young vines all around the winery. I should mention that this winery has only been in operation for two years. Not far from the entrance, the tasting room offers a convivial country ambience for wine tasting. When we entered, Jan-Daniel welcomed us and started to tell us about his roots and the family wine history. Born from Swiss parents and raised in the dairy farm environment, Jan-Daniel learned at young age how to work the land and make it prosper – while likely dreaming of one day having his own project.

Jan-Daniel’s five-hectare vineyard, or should I say playground, offers enough to keep him busy. From hybrid grapes (Frontenac Blanc, Frontenac Rouge, Petite Pearl and Marquette) to well known grapes (Viognier, Cabernet Franc and Chardonnay), to name a few, the wine selection is quite remarkable for such a young winery. The tasting included white wines, a rose, red wines, sweet and fortified wines, all of which are well made easy sippers, with bright aromas and lovely tastes. Jan-Daniel’s passion is admirable and the way he talks about his wine just adds to the tasting experience. Clos du Vully may be a young family driven winery, but its professionalism, knowledge and talent will certainly bring this winery great success! I highly recommend you make the drive one sunny afternoon to talk with Jan-Daniel and try his wine. Enjoy!
